| Walter Cronkite called it "a salty, funny tale of a ship and her master." But those who have read Polly Burrough's "Zeb, Celebrated Schooner Captain of Martha’s Vineyard" know it is about a lot more than Zebulon Northrup Tilton. A whole era of island history unfolds with stories of Thomas Hart Benton, Jimmy Cagney, Charlie Sayle, George Fred Tilton, and a host of Vineyard characters. Zeb Tilton kept alive a way of life, that even as he practiced it, was a thing of the past. As he worked the schooner trade in the age of oil and gas, he became a national figure as he reminded so many of our maritime heritage.
Detrick Lawrence Productions, situated on the Vineyard since 1999, has announced production of "Zeb - Schooner Life," planned for release this summer. The film tells Zeb's story, tales of shipbuilding, arctic whaling, famous sea captains in the age of sail, and most importantly, Islanders' enduring romance with the sea. As the historian Henry Kittredge put it, "No man can live year after year with the sea at his door, its surf pounding in his ears in winter and its sunny surface dancing before his eyes all summer, without at last accepting its invitation and taking up its challenge."
