A huge night time fire at Miami International Airport broke out in the area of the facility where six fuel tanks hold 8 million gallons of fuel. More than 30 fire crews were brought in to fight the fire, which caused hundreds of flights to be cancelled or delayed over the next few days. Firefighters allowed the fuel tanks that were already burning to burn out while using ladder trucks to throw water onto other tanks to protect them. Crews also worked with airport personnel to cut off the flow of fuel.
The fire damaged the fueling system and five pumps. Initial reports indicate the fire may have been caused by malfunction in one of the fuel pipelines. No injuries were reported.
