Petroleum industry, emergency responders benefit from award-winning training program
Award-winning training on petroleum storage tanks

EDGARTOWN, MA--Petroleum storage tanks are a fixture in almost every community and major industrial facility, yet little training material exists to teach emergency responders how to handle emergencies involving petroleum leaks or fires.

"Petroleum Storage Tanks," from Emergency Film Group program provides training for emergency responders, petroleum industry personnel, and others who work with or may respond to incidents involving petroleum storage tanks and is useful for both Operations Level and Technician Level HAZWOPER training. is the definitive program on fighting storage tank fires. Recently updated, the 29-minute program is the winner of multiple awards including the first place award from Videofuego, a Telly, an Achievement Award from the Society for Technical Communication, and the Silver Apple award from the National Education Film & Video Festival.

For emergency situations, the program covers incident command and size-up issues. Offensive, defensive and non-intervention strategies are discussed. There is in-depth coverage of the use of foam, including foam blankets, foam concentrates, application rates, and duration of application. Other topics covered include water supply, controlling run-off, protecting exposures, and the special problems of open top floating roof fires and boilovers.

Four basic types of above-ground, low-pressure storage tanks are studied, including cone roof tanks, open floating roof tanks, covered floating roof tanks, and horizontal tanks. Stressing the safety of the responder as top priority, "Petroleum Storage Tanks" examines secondary containment systems, instrumentation, spill and overflow protection, foam systems and fire protection features of tanks. The importance of pre-incident planning is emphasized, with specific information-gathering tasks recommended.

It is available in both VHS and DVD format. Storage Tank Emergencies: Guidelines & Procedures, a guidebook written by Hildebrand & Noll, is included with the package.
